Baby Gates are Only Safe if Installed Correctly

Whether or not you have opted for tension or mounted safety gates, they will only hold up if they are installed correctly.  The mounted gates should come with hardware.  If the hardware is missing, don’t be tempted to use your own.  Take it back to the store or call the manufacturer. The first step to installation should be accurately measuring the door or opening where you wish it to be.  Measure the inside of the door frame and find baby safety gates that are at least that width.  Once you find the gate the best thing to do is install the gate on the interior of the door frame.  If you install it to the wood trim there is a risk that it can be pulled loose especially when your toddler decides to climb it.  If the gate is going somewhere like the top of the stairs, find the most secure wood to use to insert the screws.

When you install the gate be absolutely sure that you are not putting it in backward

A backward gate can be difficult to open if equipped with a latch mechanism and will expose springs, tension wires and possibly hazards that can be used as foot holds.  When the gate is installed, try to make sure that it is precisely level so any self closing features will work properly.  The next step is to make sure that any exposed screws, bolts or metal pieces are covered with soft plastic that can’t be removed.  Open and close the gate several times before assuming it is fool proof.

Moving parts easily wiggle free and screws can come loose from the wall.  You don’t want to find out that the gate has become lose by watching a child fall down the stairs.  Keep in mind that mounted gates are the only option for child safety gates at the top of stairs.

The Easiest Way to Install a Baby Safety Gate!

Use spring rod gates wherever applicable.  These gates should be installed firmly so that they do not have wobble room or become dislodged.  They usually have plastic caps on the end of the rods to ensure they won’t slide down the wall.  Although they may not look very sturdy – they are!  In this day and age, safety experts have made phenomenal products that are easy for parents and effective for children.  Out shopping for gates?  Look for a seal from the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Associates and you will know you have a tried, tested and durable gate!
